Summary

This escorted small group tour is tailored for female travellers who prefer a ladies-only experience. The 12-day tour begins at Minto on the Yukon River, just off the Klondike Highway north of Carmacks, and finishes just before the river bears west of the highway into its most remote and quiet sections. Flow into the wilderness and savour nature’s splendours as you sail past evergreen forests, rock ledges and soaring mountains. Reach Dawson City, the 19th century Klondike Gold Rush base, and explore the town’s historic sites before enjoying a fabulous night at the Diamond Tooth Gerties Casino. This is the perfect trip to make new friends or reconnect with old ones.

Skill Level: BEGINNER
Never even sat in a canoe before? No problem! The open programs always start off with an instructional component designed to teach you the skills necessary for safe wilderness travel. A background in camping and paddling is an asset but not necessary. These programs are open to expert and novice paddlers alike. You will appreciate the experienced teaching skills of the patient guides.

Itinerary

Day 1, Whitehorse
Your guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your downtown hotel. In the afternoon, there will be time for an orientation, gear check, and a chance to pick up any last-minute supplies.

Day 2, Whitehorse – Yukon River (Minto)
Departing early this morning, a shuttle van will transport the group and equipment to the put in point at Minto. From here, paddle for a few hours and make camp a short distance down-river. Overnight accommodation is at a wilderness campsite. (L, D)

Day 3 - 8, Yukon River
Fort Selkirk lies about a day’s paddle ahead. The oldest European settlement in the Yukon, Fort Selkirk was established as a fur trading post by Robert Campbell of the Hudson Bay Company in 1848. Today, what remains of the town is a Yukon Territorial Historic Site and is home to a few summer residents from the local Selkirk First Nation. Plan to spend at least an evening here, enjoying the hospitality of Fort Selkirk’s present-day caretakers. Beyond, the river is quiet and characterized by high bluffs and large tributaries, including the Stewart and White River, which join the river at stunning viewpoints. Most of the camping will be on gravel bars and sandy islands, with a few visits to old cabins and historic sites. Accommodation in wilderness campsites. (B, L, D)

Day 9, Dawson City
Today, arrive in Dawson City. Located at the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers, this lovingly preserved, and brightly painted frontier town is alive with live music, contemporary art, and quirky northern fun. Stay overnight in a hotel accommodation. (B)

Day 10, Dawson City
Today, tour the town. Depending on the group’s interests, you can visit any of the numerous historic sites, including the SS Keno, Palace Grand Theatre, the Commissioners Residence, and the cabins of Jack London and Robert Service; you can also drive out to site of the original gold strike at Bonanza creek, visit the famous Dredge #4 National Historic Site, or pan for gold. The last stop of the day will be at the Midnight Dome overlook, which provides a great view of Dawson City and both the Klondike and Yukon River valleys, giving you an impression of the scale of the land through which you’ve just paddled. In the evening, pay a visit to Diamond Tooth Gerties Casino. This lively casino offers all the usual games, as well as a raucous can-can floor show. Tonight, you will overnight in a hotel accommodation.

Day 11, Dawson City - Whitehorse
In the morning, drive south to Whitehorse on the Klondike Highway, stopping in at pleasant Moose Creek Lodge for a break. As you near Carmacks, begin to see the Yukon River again, with a wonderful viewpoint at the Five Finger Rapids. On arrival in Whitehorse, check into a hotel and enjoy one last group dinner. Overnight hotel accommodation.

Day 12, Whitehorse
The final day together. You will be transferred to the airport. End of tour.
