Itinerary

Day 1, Port Hardy - Farewell Harbour Lodge
Depart Port Hardy Airport or hotel between 9:30 and 10:30 am. Arrive at Alder Bay by 12:00 pm for your 12:30 pm departure aboard a high-speed water taxi for the scenic 30-minute service to Farewell Harbour. Greet Farewell Harbour Lodge staff at the dock (1:00 pm). Check in, receive a welcome orientation and lunch. Relax, you’re here! After settling into accommodation, join an afternoon cruise in search of marine wildlife in the waters of the famous Johnstone Strait and Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. Return to the lodge by 4:30 pm.
Buffet dinner is at 6:00 pm, followed by next day activity briefing. Evening presentation is at 7:00 pm on some aspect of coastal ecology. (L, D)

Day 2, Farewell Harbour Lodge
After breakfast, meet on the dock at 8.00am for your first full day bear viewing adventure to one of the main grizzly viewing estuaries! Our bear viewing takes us to one of several estuaries where we view either from a zodiac or on foot depending on the tide. It is recommended to not use viewing platforms, preferring to view wildlife at eye level in their natural habitat.
Return by 4:30 pm. Buffet dinner is at 6:00 pm followed by an evening presentation on the Great Bear Rainforest, Bears or First Nations culture. (B, L, D)

Day 3, Farewell Harbour Lodge
After an early breakfast, meet your guides on the dock for a brief dry-land orientation to your stable, tandem sea kayak. Launch into the protected waters of Farewell Harbour for an introductory paddle instruction before heading out for your day-trip adventure. Your guides will lead you on a special excursion to explore our local waters by sea-kayak providing you with a unique perspective on the marine ecosystem. Venturing out into Blackfish Sound and the watery world of whales, dolphins, sea lions and porpoises, you will immerse yourself in another dimension as you synchronize to the slower and gentler rhythms of self-propelled travel. June and early July feature special encounters with the gentle giants of Blackfish Sound known as the Humpback whales as they ply the waters in search of Herring and other small bait fish. Later in July, come the orca in search of the mighty chinook salmon. Throughout June and July, visitors are also often blessed with Dall’s porpoises, stellar sea lions and Pacific white side dolphins. You may also get lucky with a Black Bear as they forage along the shore of the Broughton Archipelago in search of crab and invertebrates. Return to the lodge by 4:30 pm to a nice hot shower, some delicious appetizers, sumptuous dinner, great BC wine, capped by an entertaining evening presentation. (B, L, D)

Day 4, Farewell Harbour Lodge – Port Hardy
Choose from one of the following options:

  • A short morning sea kayak excursion
  • A marine excursion,
  • A guided interpretive rain forest hike

Return to the lodge for the return water taxi back to Alder Bay arriving for your transfer back to Port Hardy Airport. (B)
